Wake Up and Be Awesome!

That is going to be my new motto from now on...  "Wake Up and Be Awesome!"

As you can probably see I have not done anything with my blog since January :(  Make that I haven't really done much of anything with anything since January.  I went through a bit of a funk that took a loooooooong time to start climbing out of.  I still have a ways to go to get everything in order, but I seem to be on the right track.  This little gem that I got at the last National Guard Yellow Ribbon event we attend has been coming in handy :)  Seriously... a stress ball in the shape of a grenade??  Genius!!

Grenade

For those of you who have been following my blog for awhile, you know I have always struggled with my weight and, as a result, self esteem.  Back in April, I found Adventure Health and Fitness along with fitness instructors Mike & Laura.  They focus on small group training for women, most of who are busy moms with crazy schedules.  I was a little apprehensive since I had never really done small group or one on one training and, of course, didn't want to look silly while exercising or *gasp* not be able to finish a session.  In addition, I had hurt my heel last year when I started training for a 5K and hadn't done any exercise since.  I finally got up the nerve to go in for my introductory session.  What I found during my first class was what I needed to start moving forward again.  Mike was fantastic.  There are women of all fitness levels in the classes and because there are no more than 6 - 8 in a class, it gives the trainers the opportunity to work with people to ensure our form is right and we're doing what we're supposed to be doing.  As I had suspected, I couldn't finish the class :(  But, I did get through about 75% before I had to stop and take a break.  But, I felt good enough to continue!  By class #4, I was able to get through the entire 40 minute class without the need to take a break other then the water breaks.  On July 29th, 3 months later, I did 5 real push-ups (NOT on the knees) and a 20 second plank (NOT on the knees)!  First time ever in my life to do this.  Oh, and by the way, be a part of one of Laura's classes is a little like working out with Jillian Michaels... except without the yelling :)  BTW... my new motto came from a Facebook post from AHF!

I can I will

Another change that I've made is regarding my eating habits.  In January, I tried the Sonoma diet for a couple of weeks.  The food was great, but it was A LOT of prep and cooking.  Most nights we wouldn't eat dinner until after 8:00 PM since we usually don't get home in the evenings until almost 6:30 PM.  So it didn't really work with our lifestyle.  We need something that can be thrown together in 30 minutes or less.  I gave Weight Watchers another go, but this time online since it has been difficult to get to the meetings.  Not enough accountability for me and too many choices.  In March, I tried Jenny Craig for 30 days.  Now this was something I could do since most things were prepackaged so I didn't really have to think about what to make.  And a lot of it was pretty good.  In 30 days I lost 8 lbs so it definitely works.  The only problem is that it is so expensive.  You still have to buy your veggies and stuff to go with the meals.

Towards the end of June, one of my co-workers introduced me to Isagenix, which is a nutritional cleanse program.  It cuts out caffeine, sugar, gluten, and loads of other toxins that you put into your body everyday.  I was intrigued since I needed to do something to get myself back on track.  So, being who I am, I did a bunch of research.  A lot of the stuff they had in the program, my trainers also recommended.  So, Freddy and I decided to give the 30 day cleanse program a go.  We started on July 7th.  The program consisted of 5 days of 2 shakes, 2 snacks, and a meal and then 2 deep cleanse days where you are drinking a cleansing liquid 4 times during the day.  No food on the cleans days except for some small wafers in between drinks.  The cleanse days were surprisingly easy and I ended up losing 10 lbs on the program.  Freddy also ended up losing some weight as well.  We also ate much healthier for our dinners since we had a list of foods to choose from.  In addition, we started shopping at our Whole Foods store and ate more organic foods.  It is a little more expensive, but the combination of Isagenix AND my training classes was the same price as 30 days of Jenny Craig so I figure it all evens out in the end.  We are starting another 30 day cleanse tomorrow so I'm looking forward to reporting our progress.

AND, with all this motivation, I finally start moving forward on our house and making it a home.  We moved in last September, and then Superstorm Sandy happened, and then my motivation was gone.  Over the past 2 months, I've been making steps to get things organized and put together. I have big plans for our front yard next summer!

Oh yeah... this little guy is my main driving force for getting my behind in gear...

So... for the rest of 2013 I'm going to strive to wake up in the morning and BE AWESOME!

Why I Love the 'Burbs

I grew up in the suburbs of Michigan in a small town.  You know, the kind where you run into someone you know everywhere you go.  My parents were raised in the same town so no matter where we went, someone would recognize us as offspring of our parents or even our grandparents!

I moved to NYC back in 2000 ready to take on the big city and tired of small town living.  I had a couple of roommates and loved city living.  That was when I was single and twenty-something.

Now that I'm married, with a child, and thirty-something, I am so happy to be back in the suburbs!  The other night we just went for a walk in our neighborhood with Marsh and didn't have to worry about where we could walk or if we were going to get run over by a speeding car blasting the latest hip hop out of their window.

Of course we had to carry the car back because Marsh wanted to be carried himself!

I can't wait for our first snowfall :)

Signs

We started to really talk about owning our own home again. In addition, our apartment is just too small for 2 adults, 1 baby, and 4 cat. We would like to have another baby so that Marshall isn't an only child and can't do that until we're in a house.

Well, I received this in the mail over the weekend...

New Year... New Look

So over a month since my last post... Well, now that I've gotten things in order I can post more often again. I thought since we were starting a new year I would change the look a little here. I also started my "52 Weeks of the Olveras" blog. My plan is to post once a week with some photos that illustrate how that week went. We'll see how successful it is :) The link is in my sidebar to the right.

The past month has been quite busy and hectic that I've barely had time to think. Here's what's been going on over the past month...

We moved!! Yep, we made the jump over the Hudson River to New Jersey. Let me tell you that travelling for an hour with three cats in carriers is not pleasant. At one point I thought they were trying to harmonize with each other. We're in a quieter neighborhood now with a permanent parking spot. We're still renting so we're hoping to save up enough money to buy a place in a couple of years. Not sure where just yet, but it is on the horizon. It took the kitties a few days to get used to the new digs but now they've claimed it as their own.

I got very addicted to "Bejeweled Blitz" on Facebook. Very dangerous :)

We celebrated Christmas in our new home. I was worried I wouldn't be able to put up my decorations in time with the move but I got them up! This was the first year that Hadley and Harley didn't try to pull the tree over. I think they are finally growing up! Even though this was supposed to be our year to go to Michigan for Christmas, we decided to stay in NYC. My brother is getting married in March in Key West in March so we wanted to make sure we were able to make it down. We'll be driving so I'm sure we'll have some cool pictures when we get back. Anyway, here are a couple shots of our Christmas decor.

I got back on track with Weight Watchers. I lost about 20 lbs on WW back in 2006 and another 10 lbs before our wedding. Unfortunately I've gained it all back and then some. I've been back on track the past three weeks. Yes I started again the week before Christmas. I felt I had to in order to make sure I didn't go crazy over the holidays. I was still up 0.6 on my Tuesday weigh in after Christmas, but this is the first time the gain has been less than a pound after the holidays. I was then down 2.4 last week. I'm taking a different approach this time and focusing on smaller mini-goals rather than the final goal. My first mini-goal is to lose 10lbs before St. Patricks Day. I'll continue to report my progress here and, when I get brave enough, post some before and afters. Let me tell you I've seen some not too flattering "before" pics from the holidays :(

Freddy volunteered to go to Germany for 3 weeks to help the 133rd in March :(

We welcomed in 2010! My mom and her travel buddies were in town for New Year's this year and decided to brave the elements in Times Square. I've been sick off an on the past few weeks so I decided to not spend 6 hours standing in the rain that night. They had a good time and we got to spend some time together. And, with that I'm documenting my New Year's resolutions for 2010. At the end of the year we'll take a look back and see how many I was able to move forward with :)
--> Earn my 10% key chain from WW.
--> Start training for a 5K.
--> Earn my PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.
--> Start experimenting with photo editing.
--> Take more photos of our day to day.
--> Complete my Wedding scrap book.
--> Start my Kitty scrap book.
--> Start cross stitching again.

I hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy 2010!

Black Friday

So stores like Old Navy opened up at 3am this morning. I think Kohls was open at 4am. The Toys R Us in Times Square opened their doors at midnight! I was not at Old Navy, Kohls, or Toys R Us this morning. I was sound asleep and warm in my bed! Having worked so many Black Fridays from my years as a Meijer employee I will never voluntarily partake in the Black Friday festivities... EVER!!!

Instead I spent the first half of today in a Dayquil coma. Yes... after months of drifting in and out of potentially being sick I woke up this morning with a headache, congestion, and quite the lovely cough. But after a nice hot shower and cuddling with the hubby in front of a NCIS marathon for a few hours we got to work. We are moving in 4 days and the house just isn't going to pack itself. I'm proud to say we got the Dining Room and most of the Living Room pretty much done today. I still want to try and bang out some of the kitchen but we are almost out of boxes. We're waiting for another shipment to arrive by tomorrow.

Next weekend I'm hoping we can get to the PX up at West Point and get our new Christmas Tree to put up. I normally put my stuff out Thanksgiving weekend so I'm chomping at the bit a little right now.

AND... only 92 days until our VACATION! My brother is getting married in Key West in March. Since Freddy and I never really had a honeymoon we are planning on going out a week before and have ourselves a little vacation. It has been a while since I've taken a real vaction where I wasn't checking work email so I'm kind of excited. Plus my baby brother is getting married!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Jersey Bound... And Other Stuff...

Wow! I can't believe it has been two weeks since I last post. Who knew time could get away from you like that. Anyway, now that I've recovered from Game 163 (baseball fans will know what that means) I have moved on to the ALCS. The New York Yankees are in the ALCS for the first time in 5 years. They swept the Twins last week, with in true Yankee fasion a few nail biting moments. On the other side of the division, the California Angels swept the Boston Red Sox. So now it is the Yankees and the Angels doing battle for the American League title. The Yankees are currently up by 1 game, with game 2 scheduled for tonight. We are supposed to get our second Noreastern any minute now so it is likely the game will be postponed.

In other topics... my job is kicking my ass right now :( I'm hoping once we get into our year end freeze next month that things will quiet down a bit. Right now everyone is trying to get everything in before the freeze. I'm really looking forward to enjoying the holiday season this year.

And, we are jumping the Hudson River to New Jersey! Yep... that's right folks we are moving to Jersey City. We'll still be renting but we will be in a little bit safer and quieter neighborhood. I'll feel a little better as well being home by myself when Freddy is away at drill or training. December 1 is moving day so I'll be without my beloved Internet for a while... The good thing is that we'll be closer to the city so we will be able to go out like we used to. Right now it takes us so long to get home to our house in Brooklyn that we rarely go into the city aside from work.

So... that being said... I need to go start boxing stuff :)

The House Hunting Begins...

Finally.... after vacations, business trips, holidays, drills, and BNOC we were finally able to go out today and start the process of purchasing our first home. We saw an ok house, a couple of questionable houses, and one really cute house. With Freddy commuting to Camp Smith daily and my own commute into Manhattan, we need to find someplace in between, which looks like it might be Rockland County. In addition, I cannot handle the ghetto neighborhood we are currently in any longer!

It was so nice to drive through some neighborhoods and not have to step over trash or feel the ground vibrate. I can't even express how impatient I am to get this process over with so we can move into our new home... wherever that may be...
